One of kiddo's great grandpa's (on James' side) passed away one month to the day before Malachi was born. We didn't find out what we were having and Malachi ended up being the first great grandson in the family. This grandparent had been ill for quite awhile, but we were so hopeful that he would hold on until Malachi was born. James and I had decided that we would make the trip to see him immediately after the birth so the two could meet. God had a different time line, though.
The boys have seen pictures of this sweet man whom they never met. We have explained to them about death and heaven and they understand that concept as well as kids their age can. Sometimes they will get really sad looks on their faces. They will come up to me and say they are sad. When I ask why, they will respond that they really miss their Grandpa who is in Heaven. We miss him, too.
Do you mind that I add my thoughts regarding Mr. Salzman? He was a gentle giant and funny. We enjoyed meeting both sets of James' grandparents at your wedding. And we have especially enjoyed the times with "Grandma Salzman" at various family get togethers. They made quite the couple.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter how young or old one is, the loss of a beloved grandparent crops up from time to time. That is why it is lovely that you are keeping his memory alive by sharing those stories and pictures with your little ones.
